Birding
With plenty of rain and sunshine and low human density across Selva Escondida's rainforest that ranges between 558-1,772 feet / 540 meters above sea level, there are plenty of opportunities to see birds. So much so that we've created a
Birding Page.
Visit our Birding Page
Cascada Verde
Cascada Verde in Uvita is an easily accessible waterfall. Drive towards Uvita and turn left on the road right before the first BM supermarket. Continue on the dirt road for a while until you see a sign for Cascada Verde. There is a small charge to get to these falls. Bring your lunch and drink. You might end up staying longer than you think!
Fishing
Marina Pez Vela, just an hour away, is a world-class marina and vibrant destination in Quepos. Whether you're booking a fishing charter, enjoying oceanfront dining, or browsing boutique shops, it’s the perfect spot for a day trip. Don’t miss the sunset over the Pacific or the occasional live music and events along the boardwalk!
Nestled about 1¼ hours from your villa, Sierpe Marina is the tranquil gateway to the wild wonders of the Osa Peninsula and the immense Térraba‑Sierpe mangrove reserve—the largest in Central America
If you're up for a beach launch, boat operators also operate from Uvita beach by Ballena / Whales Tale.
Horseback Riding
Rancho La Merced is where we take the family for horseback riding tour. You can choose to ride on the beach or by the river and waterfall.

Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio national park is good for a day trip. It's 45 minutes north towards Quepos. Take your crew up for lunch at the restaurant built out of an airplane and spend the afternoon on the beach where the waves are very tamed. Visit some art galleries.
Nauyaca Falls
Nauyaca Falls is beautiful but it’s hard to get to. The most common way is to go on horses. We can arrange for a local family that has a farm and gives horseback tours to Nauyaca with meals.
Paragliding
Selva Escondida is conveniently located by world-class paragliding site and tandem flights are available through reputable local professionals.
Property Waterfalls
Selva Escondida has an average rainfall of 4,000-5,000 mm (157-197 inches), concentrated during the rainy seasons from mid-May through late-November. Selva Escondida has steep terrain. The combination of these two facts means there are many water ways including some small waterfalls and canyoning too.
River Rafting
San Isidro
Take a drive to
San Isidro, a mountain town and regional hub, 45 minutes inland. The drive is very scenic and worth it if you want to see a more authentic side of Costa Rica. Each Thursday morning there's a farmer's market that has an abundance of fresh fruit & veggies. We normally stock up for a week of two of fruits & vegetable.

Thrill-seekers will zip along 7 cables (including one epic 1.1 km line), navigate 13 platforms, descend 3 rappels, and cross 2 hanging bridges—all with expert bilingual guides, safety gear, and fresh fruit snacks included. Wildlife lovers get the bonus of spotting monkeys, sloths, birds, frogs, and more through lush primary forest.
Located about an hour from Selva Escondida, Osa Canopy Tour is ideal for day trips. With two daily departures (around 8 AM and 1 PM) and a tour duration of 2–3 hours (or up to 4 hours including ascent/descent), it offers flexibility to fit any schedule.

Hiking
Selva Escondida is a tropical rainforest property with Mother Nature on full display. You'll be able to explore wildlife without having to drive anywhere. We maintain a private trail system as follows:
The hike is complimentary with our staff. Please plan on leaving a tip.
Hydrate yourself before the hike!
- CamelBak/hydration pack/water bottle
- Good cotton socks
- Hat
- Light long pants
- Short sleeve shirts that won't catch on branches.
- Sunglasses (you don't need them for the Mirador & Cascada Sofia as you will be in the jungle)
The best hiking shoes are rubber fireman/rain boots that cost ~$20 at the local hardware store and Villa Chill also keeps some extra boots. Tennis shoes are fine during dry season.
Hiking Selva Escondida is a great work out immersed in one of Earth's prettiest paradises.

Besides supporting the local community, we find the highest quality food sources.

The Mirador
Hiking to the Mirador is the best part of Selva Escondida. Our trail system to the Mirador is moderately difficult yet many grandparents and grandchildren have explored the trails. The view of the Pacific Ocean, Whales Tail, Osa Peninsula, Isla de Caño, and the surrounding rainforest is both impressive and relaxing, and the breeze will make you not want to leave. Dining room
El Manu ::: Water Temple
Set over a water stream, El Manu was originally a restaurant known for its great food and one of the first places to have electricity in the area leveraging hydroelectricity. The space has been preserved and includes teak floor harvested onsite within Selva Escondida, reptile statues in the flowing water beneath El Manu. The rainforest immersion hovering above flowing water is ideal for yoga and meditation. Two plexiglass panels on the floor allows you to look down upon a flowing stream below.
It is very common to find blue morphos here in the morning, and is a stunning place during the raining season.

Whale's Tail
You must visit the beach that forms on the
Whales Tail ("Bellena") at low tide. Driving south, it's just after Uvita on the right. You can see this amazing geological formation from our
Villa Chill and throughout
Selva Escondida. During low tide, a sand bar appears for 3 hours connecting to a rocky island. Wonderful for kids & parents. Ballena has the most gentle waves suitable for relaxing in the water or beginning body surfing. The beach also usually has sand dollars. This is a 25 minutes drive and I highly recommend it! Try to avoid the weekends as it get crowded. Remember to go during low tide and pack water & snacks. Here is the link for
