What should I do coming back from the beach?2025-02-26T14:41:33-06:00

We invite you to use our two outdoor showers when you come back from the beach. There is one on the left side of the main house and another one, hidden underneath the stairs by the pool.

Please shake off all sands from your towels and leave them by the laundry area. Our cleaning lady will change the towels for you.

Is there recycling at Villa Chill?2025-02-26T14:36:56-06:00

Yes! Please help us recycle! You will find recycling bins for aluminum, plastic bottles, and glasses in the laundry room.

Unfortunately, the recycle sites don’t take paper or cardboard.

What should I do if a wild dog shows up at Villa Chill?2025-02-26T14:34:33-06:00

If you get visits from a neighbor’s pet, please don’t feed them or let them in the house. They will go away eventually.

What should I do when there is a power outage?2025-02-26T14:31:07-06:00
Because we are in the rainforest, storms can sometimes bring down trees on power lines, temporarily affecting the grid. While this is beyond our control, we have some helpful tips:
Hot showers: Since we have 80-gallon insulated solar-heated water tanks for both the main house and guest houses, use hot water sparingly until power returns or more sun shines.
Meals: Our gas stove and BBQ allow you to cook even if the power is out, and dining before sunset can be helpful.
Lighting & Devices: Villa Chill is equipped with emergency battery-powered night lights throughout the houses, and we recommend keeping your devices charged when possible.
Relax & Unwind: Power is restored within an hour or two unless a major storm occurs, so we encourage guests to embrace the jungle atmosphere. Enjoy an early night’s rest, listen to the sounds of nature and breezes coming off the Pacific.
Do you need to rent a 4 x 4?2025-04-08T17:55:41-06:00

YES! ABSOLUTELY! You need to rent an all wheel drive (4 x 4) car to access our property and most surrounding areas. Escaleras Road is quite steep and a good car is especially important when it rains.

What is the best way to get to the property?2025-04-08T17:56:52-06:00

Search for “Villa Chill Costa Rica” or “Selva Escondida Costa Rica” on Google Map.

Fly into San Jose International Airport (SJO). From there, rent a 4 x4  and drive  2.5 to 3 hours to our property.

Alternatively, you can take an internal flight (the building next door to the international airport) with Sansa Air to Quepos and have the car rental company meet you there. From Quepos, it’s a 45 minutes drive to our property. Tickets are quite reasonable if you book in advance.

Do we tip in Costa Rica?2025-02-26T13:06:04-06:00

At restaurants tipping is not necessary, although many tourists still tip.

We normally tip when we take surf lessons, horseback riding and other activities.

If you take a hike with our property manager, tipping would be appreciated. Most guests tip our cleaning lady as well.

Is there any hidden light switches in the main house?2025-02-26T13:07:14-06:00

Yes! The kitchen has under counter lighting and the switch is near the sink under the cabinet.

The swimming pool light is on one of the pole on the patio, behind where the TV is located.

Are there a lot of mosquitos? 2025-02-26T13:09:15-06:00

There are very few mosquitos on our property because the eco system is well balanced.

During the day, we like to open all the screen doors but close them at sunset. We always bring insect repellent when we go out to the beach or to restaurants, especially at sunset.

Where can I get a massage?2025-02-26T13:17:44-06:00

Plan on having a spa day at Selva Escondida! Take a hike with our property manager in the morning and schedule on site massages. We have a lovely masseuse that we can recommend. She claims that El Manu ::: Water Temple is her favorite place to work on earth!

Hotel Cuna del Angel and Escaleras Village both have nice spas and are very close to Selva Escondida.

When is the best time to go to the beach?2023-11-29T11:23:25-06:00

It all depends on if you are planning to take a walk, swim or surf. With little kids, we think it’s best to play on the beach 2 hours before or after high tide. For begginer surf lesson, we normally try to go 3 hours before low tide or 1 hour before high tide. You can check out the tide chart.

Can I use US dollars in Costa Rica?2023-11-29T11:24:53-06:00

Yes, you can, but the preferred currency is the local currency, the Costa Rican Colon. You will find local ATM machines in both Dominical and in Uvita where you can withdraw US dollars or CR colones.

Is there a departure tax for leaving Costa Rica?2025-02-26T13:23:46-06:00

Not anymore! We used to have to go to a special counter at the airport and pay a departure tax and they only took cash. You will find that Costa Rica’s airport is efficient, modern and very easy to navigate.

Is there drinking water at the Villa?2025-02-26T14:32:25-06:00

Yes! Our water comes from mountain streams on the property. The main house has an ultra violet water system and a reverse osmosis system, and is safe to drink.

We like to fill up a pitcher of water so that it’s always ready to be served.
